“Like many of my generation, I was given a marquetry kit as a young teenager, and the seed was sown. Fast forward over forty years and planning retirement, a visit to the NWWS (to explore woodturning as a possible new hobby!) enabled me to stumble across the LMG. I signed up for the Beginners’ Course in 2006, and I’m still here.
I was struck by the friendliness of the club members when I first arrived, and this continues to be a real strength of the club, with everyone willing to help out with advice and encouragement on all aspects of the craft. I enjoy helping out at the Shows, and although by no means an expert, I am happy to demonstrate marquetry skills to encourage others to have a go, or to come along as I did to the Beginners’ Course. I don’t feel I’m particularly artistic, but marquetry enables me to make some pieces which can be displayed without embarrassment. I became Secretary of the group in 2009.” |
