Lockdown Marquetry Display - 2020/1

Below is a sample of some of the work that our members have created during the Covid-19 Lockdown and local restrictions period. There are also a few pieces that had been created for the Great Yorkshire and Club competitions, which were both cancelled, that may not have appeared on our web-site yet.

Ernest Ripley

Update 01/02/2021
I was contacted earlier today my Ernest Ripley’s family to advise that he has passed away. He was a very popular club member and he will be sadly missed.

Ernest joined the club in 2013 following the Beginner’s Course. His work over the years has amazed many of us and will always be remembered, whether it be High Clere Castle, Castle Howard or many of his other creations.

Bow Tie - The marquetry has been applied to 1.5 mm birch ply that has been bent (with the aid of some steam) around a former. (Displayed at 2021 Great Yorkshire Show)
Small Box - The box is from the local craft shop and is on its way to a relative in the USA. The motif under the lid is used by her church, so although we don’t recognise it I hope she does.
Coastal Scene - The picture is postcard size and based on a picture by an artist called Ian Mitchell, he’s painted lots of pictures of the north Yorkshire coast based on the style of the old 1930’s railway posters.

Green (ish) Man – design adapted from part of an etched panel on a glass shower door.
The Musicians – adapted from a very small BW/sepia photo taken by my grandad of a painting done my great uncle in 1903.

N.B. Kits - If you are thinking of buying a kit on say E-Bay, remember that the veneers will still need to cut into the right shapes. It will also contain a template, instructions and backing MDF. It is NOT like a jigsaw puzzle. If it is an older kit the glue will probably have dried up and the knife may have been removed for safety, in case it is sold to an under age purchaser.

Lake Scene (Club Kit) - Sam started this club kit during our 2020 Beginner's Course.
The Photo Frame uses the beginner's Guinea Pig club kit, which was designed by one of our previous beginners. Made for his partner who loves Guinea Pigs.
The VW Campervan Tray is his own design.
Viking Ship Tea Chest - For his stove/teapots etc. when camping.
Tray - Present for future Mother-in-Law
