Richard Allen (2014)
I have always admired creative ability of every description while never quite finding a way of producing anything of worth myself. So, when visiting the Ilkley Art Festival with my wife the last thing on my mind was the thought of discovering a new and fulfilling hobby. However having been attracted to the Leeds Marquetry Groups stand by the display of some stunning and quite outstanding pieces of marquetry I was persuaded to sign up for the “Beginners Course” in January 2014.
By the end of the six weeks my first picture was almost finished and I was hooked. Club nights are very friendly affairs and the more accomplished members are only too willing to offer guidance and assistance with any project. This has really helped as I have started to learn more about the different types of veneer and use some of the more complex techniques.
Marquetry is a hobby which can be all consuming or one that you turn to on wet days and winter evenings but it is great fun and very rewarding.

Geoff Margetson (2013)
I was first introduced to Marquetry by my dad in the late 1950’s when we completed a kit called “Evening Calm”. Over 50 years passed with no marquetry, when following retirement, from a lifetime in IT, I attended the 2012 “Crafts for Christmas Show” and signed up for the 2013 Beginner’s Course at LMG. I was delighted when my course kit, Tudor Rose Coaster, won 3rd Prize in the 2013 Yorkshire Show Novice (Applied) section and 5th in 2014 for my draughts set. Then, finding a kit on the Internet called “Evening Calm”, yes the same one, I was delighted to win the SPA Laminates Trophy (Beginner’s Kit) in the 2014 Seaton Cup Club Competition.
Now, no longer a beginner, I have a long way to go to catch up with the experts at the Club but can see what you can produce, if you stick at it. Thanks to all those who have offered help and advice.
I am currently a committee member, membership secretary, librarian and web master.
